FWPA research projects classified under the Environment category are focused on research and development projects that not only address the impact the forest and wood products industry has on environment but also how the changing environment impacts on the industry
Major issues addressed by Environment research projects include consumption and availability of water for forestry and wood processing activities, carbon accounting, bushfires, and biodiversity.

M. Kapambwe, F. Ximenes, P. Vinden & R. Keenan • PNA016-0708 • 11 May 2009
To improve estimates of carbon stocks in housing in Australia, in particular improving estimates of housing longevity, patterns of change in the quantity of wood used in housing overtime and the fate of wood following demolition or renovation, and to analyse the potential for increases in carbon stocks in housing given adoption of alternative policies to encourage greater use of timber or increased longevity of timber in housing.
