Growing, mining, manufacturing, distributing, using and finally disposing of products uses resources and energy, and creates pollution emissions that have a detrimental affect on the environment. Comparing which products demand less resources requires that a comprehensive Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) is done to measure all the inputs (energy, land and water use, renewable and non-renewable raw materials etc.) and outputs (global warming gases, chemical pollutants etc.) which are used in LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) studies. This project created the first national LCI database of representative Australian forestry and wood products, including both native hardwood and plantation softwood forestry.
