Dynamics of Carbon Stocks in Timber in Australian Residential Housing

The role of harvested wood products in the global carbon cycle has been considered in scientific analysis of greenhouse gas emissions for some time.

This study aimed to develop improved estimates of the dynamics of carbon stocks in timber in housing in Australia. Key variables in models to develop these estimates are the number and size of completed dwellings, the amount of wood products used per unit of floor area, the longevity of dwellings (and wood products), and the amount and fate of construction and demolition wood waste. The study was based on the analysis of the literature, published industry surveys, questionnaires sent to builders, architects and demolition companies across all States (except the Northern Territory) and interviews with estimators from large building companies.

An average of 2.05 Mt of carbon dioxide equivalents was added to carbon stock each year in residential housing in Australia over the last 10 years.
